Practical AOV guide · Checkout upsells

How to increase Shopify average order value with checkout order bumps

Getting more customers isn't the only way to grow revenue. Offer a relevant extra product to buyers who are already checking out—and measure whether it increases revenue per order without hurting conversions.

Whop processing fees are separate. Payment eligibility and payouts are controlled by Whop.

01Keep your Shopify store

Products, cart and fulfillment stay on Shopify.

02Accept payments with Whop

Your connected, eligible Whop business processes the payment.

03Orders return to Shopify

Confirmed paid orders sync for the normal fulfillment workflow.

GET MORE FROM EACH CUSTOMER

More revenue from the traffic you've already paid for.

Average order value (AOV) is the amount customers spend per completed order. A checkout order bump gives shoppers a chance to add a useful product before payment; if they accept, the order can be worth more.

The goal isn't to force extras into every purchase. It's to find a natural complement worth buying.

The order bump revenue formula

HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE · NOT A VOSS CASE STUDY

500 orders × 10% acceptance × $12 add-on = $600

That is $600 in illustrative extra gross order revenue. With the same 500 completed orders, it adds $1.20 in average gross revenue per order.

It assumes all original orders still complete, each accepted offer earns $12 and no orders are refunded. It ignores product costs, fulfillment, advertising, fees and taxes.

Measure the right outcome

AOV = gross order revenue ÷ completed orders. Track offer acceptance rate, final checkout conversion, gross revenue per checkout session and contribution margin—not only bump click-through rate.

A bigger AOV is only a win if the extra margin outweighs fees, added fulfillment costs and any lost completed orders.

Six product-pairing ideas that can make sense

Footwear

A relevant extra

Socks, shoe-care kit, compatible laces

Electronics

A relevant extra

Correct case, cable or charger for the device

Home & gifts

A relevant extra

Useful accessory or a real Shopify gift-wrap product

Beauty

A relevant extra

Travel size, refill or complementary product

Fashion

A relevant extra

Matching accessory that fits the style and price

Pets

A relevant extra

Complementary toy or accessory appropriate to the product

Start with one low-friction item related to the main product, then test. Avoid unrelated recommendations, exaggerated urgency and offers that distract shoppers from payment.

Order bump vs. upsell vs. post-purchase offer

Checkout order bump

A buyer sees an optional Shopify product in Voss Checkout before paying. Accepting it updates the validated cart and total.

Pre-purchase upsell

A broader recommendation or product upgrade, which can appear in the product page, cart or checkout depending on the tool.

Post-purchase upsell

Another offer made after the original payment. It is a different workflow; Voss does not currently offer a generally available native one-click post-purchase funnel.

Why choose checkout bumps?

They can add product value while the shopper is already completing an order, without asking them to enter another standalone purchase flow.

How to set up Shopify order bumps with Voss

  1. Pick a real complementary product. Make sure the Shopify variant is available and suitable for the buyer's market.
  2. Connect Shopify and Whop to Voss. In Checkout Editor, create an add-on, select the Shopify variant, choose below shipping or above payment and pick compact or premium styling. Up to three optional offers are supported.
  3. Publish and test. Confirm that a buyer can add and remove it, that shipping/taxes and discounts are correct, and that the paid order accurately reaches Shopify.
  4. Review real outcomes. Watch completed orders, gross revenue per session, AOV and margin. Keep the offer only if it helps the whole checkout experience.

Can you do this without Shopify Plus?

Native Shopify checkout-extension placement is a different product architecture from Voss's separate external checkout. Voss order bumps appear on the Voss-branded checkout connected to Shopify, rather than being inserted into Shopify's native checkout. Merchant eligibility and Whop approval still apply. International order bumps and real prices

Voss supports buyer-facing checkout text across English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese (Portugal), subject to merchant publishing. Shopify product titles and descriptions should be published in the Shopify Translate & Adapt app. Optional premium labels can be translated in the Voss editor. Pricing remains based on the Shopify quote, not an amount invented in the checkout browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Shopify checkout order bump?

A checkout order bump is an optional complementary product offered while a buyer is checking out, before the original payment is completed. In Voss, it is a real Shopify variant added to the verified checkout cart—not an invented fee or a second payment page.

How can I raise average order value without spending more on ads?

Start with relevant products that a buyer may want with what they already chose. A successfully accepted order bump can increase gross revenue per completed order without a new advertising click. Test acceptance, checkout completion, contribution margin and revenue per session to see whether it truly helps.

How do I calculate order bump revenue?

Illustrative gross add-on revenue equals completed orders × order bump acceptance rate × average add-on revenue. For example, 500 completed orders × 10% acceptance × $12 add-on price = $600 extra gross order revenue, assuming those orders and prices stay constant. This is not a promised result or net profit.

What's the difference between an order bump, upsell and post-purchase offer?

A checkout order bump adds an optional item before payment within the existing checkout. An upsell is a broader offer for a higher-value or additional item and may occur at different stages. A post-purchase offer happens after the first payment. Voss currently offers checkout order bumps, not generally available native one-click post-purchase funnels.

Can order bumps reduce conversion?

Yes. Poorly matched, distracting or expensive offers can add decision friction. Track completed checkout conversion and revenue per checkout session alongside offer acceptance and AOV; remove offers that hurt overall performance.

Are Shopify Plus checkout extensions required?

Voss presents order bumps in its Shopify-connected external checkout, not as an extension inside native Shopify checkout. The merchant needs an eligible Shopify integration and connected Whop business, not a Shopify Plus checkout-extension placement.

How many order bumps can I set up in Voss?

Up to three optional offers, each attached to a real Shopify variant. Merchants choose placement below shipping methods or above payment methods and can customize compact/premium styles.

Are add-on products and prices kept in sync with Shopify?

Voss checks the available Shopify variant and country/currency-contextual Shopify price. A buyer's add/remove action triggers a validated cart quote update before the revised total can be paid.

Can I localize an order bump for international buyers?

Yes. Voss-managed order bump labels support the enabled checkout languages. Translate Shopify product content through the Shopify Translate & Adapt app, and translate any custom premium text separately in the Voss editor.
