Automatic multilingual checkout explained
How does Shopify checkout choose a customer's language?
Understand automatic country, Shopify market, explicit language and browser matching across international stores. See what Voss supports, which countries have a default and what happens when a language isn't available.
Whop processing fees are separate. Payment eligibility and payouts are controlled by Whop.
Products, cart and fulfillment stay on Shopify.
Your connected, eligible Whop business processes the payment.
Confirmed paid orders sync for the normal fulfillment workflow.
Not every country speaks one language. Your checkout shouldn't guess.
Voss Checkout offers opt-in Automatic Market & Language Matching. Its seven supported languages follow the shopper's explicitly selected Shopify language, merchant market overrides, supported Shopify market defaults and browser preferences. When no supported language matches, your published fallback is used.

Supported market groups and language outcomes
These are representative, code-backed examples of Shopify market language defaults, not a promise to translate into every country's national language. Higher-priority shopper choices or merchant overrides can change the outcome.
US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand
English is the normal Voss interface default for these Shopify markets.
Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and more
Supported listed Shopify markets normally resolve to Spanish.
Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein
These listed Shopify markets normally resolve to German.
France, Monaco
These listed Shopify markets normally resolve to French.
Italy, San Marino, Vatican City
These listed Shopify markets normally resolve to Italian.
Netherlands
This Shopify market normally resolves to Dutch.
Portugal
This Shopify market normally resolves to Portuguese (Portugal), pt-PT.
Canada, Belgium, Switzerland
No single assumed language: an explicitly selected supported Shopify language or supported browser preference can win.
India, Brazil, Japan, UAE and other markets
A supported shopper language may be used; otherwise the merchant's fallback applies. Native Japanese, Hindi and Arabic interfaces are not provided.
What Voss checks before picking a language
- Explicit Shopify storefront language. When a shopper deliberately chooses a supported storefront language, Voss respects it, even if they are physically in a different country.
- Merchant market override. Configure a supported language for particular Shopify markets where no explicit supported Shopify language takes priority.
- Shopify market default. Supported country defaults cover listed English-, Spanish-, French-, German-, Italian-, Dutch- and Portuguese-speaking markets.
- Browser preference. Helps in multilingual and unlisted markets. An unsupported explicitly selected Shopify storefront language also allows a supported browser preference before fallback.
- Limited country and merchant fallback. IP-derived country is consulted only if Shopify has no valid market. If nothing matches a supported locale, Voss uses the merchant's published fallback.
Once the checkout session begins, the language stays stable. This selection does not change your Shopify pricing, currency or Whop payment approval.
Set up an international checkout in minutes
- Connect your existing Shopify store and your own eligible Whop business to Voss Checkout.
- Under Checkout Editor → Language → Language behavior, select Automatically match Shopify market and language, set a fallback and optional market overrides, then Publish.
- Use the Shopify Translate & Adapt app to translate and publish Shopify-managed products and storefront content. Translate merchant-custom shipping names separately where needed.
- Test a few of your own real Shopify markets and explicitly selected buyer languages, including a multilingual or unsupported-market fallback, before launching ads internationally.
Common questions from international Shopify merchants
Does Shopify checkout automatically detect language by country?
With Voss Automatic Market & Language Matching enabled, the checkout resolves from supported explicit Shopify language, merchant market override, Shopify market and browser preference, with a published fallback. A physical location alone does not guarantee a particular language.
Does Voss Checkout support every country?
Voss can be used across supported merchant Shopify markets subject to store/Whop payment eligibility, but its Voss-managed checkout UI currently supports seven languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese (Portugal). Market support is not the same as every local language being translated.
Can shoppers from France, Germany and Italy see different checkout languages on one Shopify store?
Yes, when automatic mode is enabled and the relevant Shopify markets or explicit supported languages are selected. France normally selects French, Germany selects German and Italy selects Italian unless higher-priority supported preferences apply.
How about Spain, Portugal and Latin America?
Spain and supported Spanish-speaking Shopify markets such as Mexico, Argentina and Colombia normally use Spanish. Portugal normally uses European Portuguese (pt-PT). Spanish or Portuguese can also be chosen explicitly on a compatible Shopify storefront.
What if a customer in Canada wants French rather than English?
A supported explicit French Shopify language selection takes priority. In multilingual markets such as Canada, Belgium or Switzerland, browser preference can help choose a supported locale. Your published fallback remains available.
Will Japan, India or Brazil show Japanese, Hindi or Brazilian Portuguese?
Voss does not currently offer Japanese, Hindi, Arabic or a separate Brazilian Portuguese checkout dictionary. A supported Shopify/browser preference or the merchant fallback is used. A Portuguese-language preference maps to European Portuguese (pt-PT).
Which language wins if Shopify country and browser disagree?
An explicitly selected supported Shopify storefront language wins. Then Voss checks merchant market override, supported Shopify market default, supported browser language, and a limited IP fallback only when no valid Shopify market was provided. Unsupported explicit storefront language follows a supported browser preference or fallback.
Does auto matching translate products and shipping labels?
No. Voss handles its own buyer-facing checkout interface. Merchants should use the Shopify Translate & Adapt app to publish Shopify-managed product/store translations; shipping method names and custom copy may require separate translations.
Can automatic checkout language switching change payment currency or amounts?
No. This is display-only. The current verified Shopify quote determines prices; merchant Whop payment eligibility determines payment methods.
Can I switch back to one language for everyone?
Yes. In Voss Checkout Editor → Language behavior choose One language for everyone and Publish. Automatic matching is optional and existing manual defaults stay unchanged.
