Can you accept payments on Shopify without Shopify Payments? Yes — but the options work differently.
A Shopify store does not have to use Shopify Payments. Depending on your country and business, you can use supported third-party providers, manual methods, or a separate external checkout.
Updated 5 October 2026
Option 1: supported third-party payment provider
This keeps Shopify's native checkout and changes the provider handling the card payment. Availability depends on country and provider eligibility.
Option 2: manual or alternative methods
Shopify supports additional methods such as bank transfer or other alternatives, but these are not always practical as the main payment method for consumer ecommerce.
Option 3: separate external checkout
This keeps the storefront and fulfillment in Shopify but moves the buyer's checkout/payment step elsewhere. Voss uses this model with the merchant's own Whop account.
What changes when you leave Shopify Payments
- Payment fees and payout timing can change.
- Shopify third-party transaction fees may apply depending on the setup.
- Shop Pay and other Shopify-native payment experiences may not carry over.
- Fraud, dispute and reserve rules come from the new provider.
If Shopify Payments was disabled
First resolve any request or review Shopify has given you. Another payment route only affects future eligible transactions; it does not release funds already held by Shopify Payments.
