Google Ads conversion tracking

Shopify store. External checkout. Google Ads still sees eligible paid purchases.

Switching checkout shouldn't leave your Google Ads purchase measurement guessing. Connect your Google Ads conversion action to Voss and send purchase value, currency and a stable order ID only after payment and the Shopify order are confirmed.

Why Google Ads purchase tracking can break after a checkout switch

A Shopify theme can see product and cart activity, but the final payment can happen on a different checkout domain. A Google Ads Purchase tag attached only to the original Shopify checkout may never see that completed payment. It can also accidentally count a thank-you page or duplicate a Purchase event sent elsewhere.

Voss ties its Google Ads browser Purchase event to an authorized, successfully paid Shopify order—not simply a checkout button click or payment attempt.

Connect Google Ads Purchase tracking in Voss

  1. Create or choose a website Purchase conversion action in Google Ads. In Google Ads, open Goals → Conversions. Select your Purchase action and find its tag setup details.
  2. Copy two fields: the Conversion ID (like AW-123456789) and the Conversion Label shown for that exact conversion action. These are example values, not working credentials.
  3. Open your Voss Tracking settings. Visit Voss setup and select Google Ads during optional onboarding, or choose Google Ads under Dashboard → Tracking after setup.
  4. Check for duplicate Purchase tags. Keep your existing Google tag on Shopify for other eligible activity if you use it, but make sure another checkout tracker isn't also sending the same Google Ads Purchase conversion action.
  5. Enable tracking and save. Voss automatically uses your configured Google Ads conversion ID and label for eligible completed purchases. There's no need to give Voss your Google Ads login, card or account password.

What Voss sends to Google Ads

DataHow it works
Conversion actionYour saved Google Ads Conversion ID and Label identify the website Purchase action.
Value and currencyThe authorized paid Shopify order's total and checkout currency are included.
Transaction IDThe stable Shopify order ID helps Google deduplicate repeated purchase events for the same action.
Marketing consentVoss sends the Google browser tag only when the available Shopify shopper privacy signal positively allows marketing.
AttributionGoogle determines ad attribution under its own reporting rules. Sending an event does not guarantee an attributed Google Ads conversion.

Current scope: Google Ads uses browser-based Purchase conversion tracking in Voss. Unlike the separate Meta Pixel/CAPI and TikTok Pixel/Events API integrations, Google Ads doesn't yet have server-side enhanced conversions or a full storefront event catalog through Voss.

How to verify your Google Ads conversion

  1. Open Google Tag Assistant and connect it to your Shopify storefront. Use a test browser with marketing consent granted where appropriate.
  2. Add a real product to the cart, click your store's checkout button and complete an authorized payment through Voss. Don't test by loading a thank-you link by itself.
  3. Inspect the Google Ads Purchase conversion event for the intended AW- ID and label, transaction ID, value and currency.
  4. Compare those values with the actual Shopify paid order. Confirm a failed payment never fires Purchase and refreshing confirmation doesn't create a duplicate counted sale.
  5. Check the conversion action in Google Ads for receipt. Allow for processing delays and test consent-denied journeys as well. Browser restrictions can prevent delivery even when a checkout is working correctly.

Voss cannot directly confirm Google's acceptance from the browser tag, and a tag firing in Tag Assistant does not prove a campaign received attribution. For server-acknowledged Meta and TikTok event checks, use the full ad tracking guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create a Google Ads campaign to connect tracking?

You need an existing Google Ads conversion action to obtain a valid Conversion ID and Label. Voss itself doesn't require you to create or fund a new ad campaign. Google may have its own account and billing requirements.

Can I keep Google's storefront tag on Shopify?

Yes, if it is configured appropriately for your store and consent setup. Avoid having both your native Shopify checkout tracking and Voss send the same Google Ads Purchase conversion independently.

Does Voss send conversions for failed or abandoned checkouts?

No. Google Ads Purchase is only queued after the shopper's authorized paid order has been verified. Abandoned checkouts and failed or pending payments aren't Purchase conversions.

Will Google Ads report exactly the same number of purchases as Shopify?

Not necessarily. Consent choices, browser restrictions, attribution windows, ad interactions and reporting delays can all make Google Ads counts differ from Shopify's paid orders.
