Shopify Payments on hold or reserve: what it means and what to do next

A payout hold and a reserve are not the same thing. The first job is to identify exactly which one Shopify applied, follow the request in your Shopify admin or store-owner email, and understand whether customer checkout is still accepting orders.

Hold vs reserve

Account or payout hold

Shopify says an account can be placed on hold while information is reviewed or verified. In many cases customers can still check out, but payouts can be delayed until the issue is resolved.

Reserve

A reserve temporarily keeps back a fixed amount or percentage of processed funds to cover potential losses such as disputes or refunds. The remaining amount can continue to pay out depending on the reserve terms.

What Shopify tells merchants to do first

  1. Read the banner or notification in the Shopify admin.
  2. Check the store-owner email for a request from Shopify.
  3. Provide the documents or information requested.
  4. If the notice is unclear, contact Shopify Support.
  5. If a reserve was applied, review the reserve terms and any appeal or removal requirements in the email.

This should be the first path. Switching checkout does not release funds already being held by Shopify Payments.

When another payment setup becomes relevant

If the hold or reserve creates a working-capital problem, some merchants evaluate other supported payment providers or a separate checkout for future orders. That is a business-continuity decision, not a way to bypass an existing Shopify review.

Existing held funds stay with the existing processor.

A new payment route only affects future transactions that are legitimately processed through that route. It does not unlock previous payouts or cancel a reserve.

Where Voss Checkout fits

Voss is designed for stores that want to keep Shopify for the storefront, products and fulfillment while moving buyer checkout to a branded external checkout connected to the merchant's own Whop account. Paid orders are then written back to Shopify.

What to verify before sending live traffic elsewhere

  • Whether the new payment platform is eligible for your business and products.
  • Processing fees, payout timing and any reserves or review rules.
  • Shopify third-party transaction fees that may apply to your setup.
  • Order sync, shipping, discounts, currencies and refunds.
  • Meta/TikTok attribution if paid ads are a major acquisition channel.
