Shopify Payments alternatives: the options that actually change how checkout gets paid

There is no single best alternative. The right route depends on whether you only need another supported payment gateway, or whether you need the checkout itself to run outside Shopify while products, orders and fulfillment stay in Shopify.

The four routes

1. Keep Shopify Payments

Best when it works for your business and you do not need a different payment stack. It keeps the fewest moving parts.

2. Use a supported third-party gateway

Shopify supports different payment providers by country. This keeps Shopify's checkout but changes the gateway.

3. Use an external checkout

Products and fulfillment can remain in Shopify while the buyer pays on a separate checkout connected to another payment platform.

4. Build a custom checkout stack

Useful for larger teams with engineering resources and requirements that justify owning more infrastructure.

What to compare before moving checkout

  • Where the money lands: understand whose payment account is actually processing the sale.
  • Order write-back: confirm paid orders appear correctly in Shopify for inventory, fulfillment and customer operations.
  • Shipping, tax, discounts and currency: test the exact combinations your store uses.
  • Tracking: verify purchase events reach Meta, TikTok or other ad systems without duplicates.
  • Refunds and disputes: understand which dashboard owns each action.
  • Rollback: know how quickly you can return to your previous checkout if a live test exposes a problem.

Where Voss fits

Voss Checkout is designed for an existing Shopify store that wants a branded external checkout while keeping Shopify as the operating system for products and fulfillment. The payment is processed through the Whop account the merchant connects, and Voss currently charges 0.5% per processed order with no Voss monthly fee or setup fee.

Do not switch because a comparison table says so.

Run your own test order, test the currencies and discounts you actually use, and confirm your Shopify and Whop obligations before moving live traffic.
