SHOPIFY EXTERNAL CHECKOUT EXPLAINED
Do Shopify shipping rates, taxes and discount codes still work in an external checkout?
It depends on the checkout provider. Voss connects to Shopify's real cart quote to get shipping options, tax, eligible discounts and the buyer's market currency—then validates the final payment amount before accepting a charge.
Whop processing fees are separate. Payment eligibility and payouts are controlled by Whop.
Products, cart and fulfillment stay on Shopify.
Your connected, eligible Whop business processes the payment.
Confirmed paid orders sync for the normal fulfillment workflow.
Voss keeps Shopify as the pricing source.
In a correctly connected Voss checkout, the Shopify Storefront Cart API supplies the relevant prices, delivery options, eligible discounts, tax amounts and cart total. A separate payment page does not mean the merchant must manually reproduce ordinary Shopify shipping and tax rules.
But do not assume all third-party checkouts or all Shopify checkout apps behave the same way. Your store's real combinations still need testing.
What comes from Shopify vs. Voss vs. Whop?
Rules and authoritative quote
Products, variants, market currency, shipping-rate options, applicable discount allocations, computed tax and cart total come from Shopify's cart APIs and shop configuration.
Buyer experience and checks
Voss displays the selected products, available shipping methods, tax, discount and total; handles buyer changes; verifies quote integrity; and syncs confirmed paid orders to Shopify.
Eligible payment processing
The connected merchant-owned Whop business handles the actual payment. Payment methods, acceptance, account reviews and payouts remain subject to Whop's rules.
Address, shipping and code choice
Delivery address and shipping selection can alter the amount. A coupon must be applicable in Shopify; the shopper cannot force an arbitrary price in the browser.
How a Shopify-backed quote changes step by step
- Cart and buyer context: Voss starts from actual Shopify variants/quantities and uses Shopify buyer-country/market context.
- Address and delivery: Shopify's delivery groups return eligible shipping options for the provided address. Voss displays these and can update the selected shipping method in the Shopify cart.
- Discount code: Voss sends an entered code to Shopify and reads its applicable status along with the resulting discount allocations, including shipping-targeted allocations when present.
- Tax and total: The Shopify cart returns total tax, other applicable amounts and a final total in the buyer's quoted currency.
- Payment safety: Voss verifies the quote and associated payment state. If Shopify reports an unavailable shipping option, invalid code or an amount that cannot reconcile exactly, the shopper must not be charged an invented amount.
Real-world test cases to run
Shipping rate changes after the buyer enters an address
The rate list comes from Shopify's delivery groups for the buyer context. The customer selects an available option; a change in destination can require new options and a new quote.
A customer enters a 10% discount code
Voss sends the code to Shopify. Shopify decides eligibility and allocates the discount. The Voss total reflects the resulting eligible discount—not a local percentage guessed from the code text.
A free-shipping code is applied
Voss reads the Shopify discount allocations and shipping price context. Free shipping must be returned or reflected by Shopify; Voss will not arbitrarily set shipping to zero.
A shopper changes the cart or accepts an order bump
The Shopify-backed quote can change line prices, shipping, tax, discounts and total. Voss must validate the revised cart and payment amount.
A cross-border order changes currency
Shopify Markets/storefront context determines the quoted buyer currency. Whop must separately support the payment in that currency for the merchant and buyer.
What this does not promise
Shopify is the calculation source, but specialized checkout-only discounts, gift card redemption, automatic promotions with unusual conditions, native Shopify checkout extensions and Shop Pay are not automatically guaranteed to work in an external checkout. Voss may prevent payment when an amount cannot be represented safely or when no eligible delivery rate exists. Test free/paid shipping, multiple shipping groups, tax-inclusive pricing, discount stacking, multi-quantity discounts, international currencies and refunds against your store's configuration.

Common questions about external Shopify checkout
Do Shopify shipping rates carry over to an external checkout?
Not automatically in every third-party checkout. In Voss Checkout, the Shopify Storefront Cart API provides delivery groups and shipping options for the buyer's delivery address, and an offered option is selected in the Shopify cart. Check the eligible rates for your store before switching.
Will Shopify calculate tax if I use Voss Checkout?
Voss reads the Shopify cart tax amount for the applicable buyer/address/product context rather than assigning its own tax percentage. Taxes depend on your Shopify settings and jurisdiction. Test tax-inclusive, tax-exclusive and cross-border cases as relevant.
Are Shopify discount codes compatible with Voss Checkout?
Applicable Shopify codes are supported. Voss updates Shopify's cart discount code, reads Shopify's applicable status and resulting allocations, then updates the quote. Invalid or ineligible codes are not treated as accepted. Gift cards and every checkout-only promotion are not guaranteed.
Does Voss support shipping discounts and free shipping?
Voss reads Shopify shipping options, including a zero-cost option when Shopify makes one available, and parses Shopify's shipping-targeted discount allocations. Combinations that cannot be represented or reconciled exactly must fail validation rather than silently alter the amount.
Can shipping and tax change when a buyer changes country?
Yes. Delivery country, address and Shopify Markets context may change rates, tax and buyer currency. Voss re-quotes relevant cart changes through Shopify. A valid shipping option and accurate final payment amount are needed to complete applicable physical-product orders.
Will my Shopify checkout apps and Shop Pay work in Voss?
Native Shopify checkout extensions, Shop Pay and unrelated Shopify checkout apps are not automatically compatible with an external checkout. Voss offers its own branded checkout and optional Shopify-product order bumps; test third-party app flows separately.
How is the final Whop charge protected?
Voss uses a Shopify-derived quote including products, shipping, taxes, discounts, currency and total, validates payment integrity on the server and synchronizes verified paid orders back to Shopify. It does not trust an arbitrary browser-supplied cart price.
Use your Shopify shipping, tax and discount rules with Voss. Test before going live.
Keep your products and fulfillment in Shopify. Voss connects your storefront to a separate branded checkout where your own Whop business processes payment.
Voss cannot release funds held by another provider or guarantee Whop approval or payout timing.
