How external checkout orders sync back to Shopify
A good external checkout does not leave your team managing two disconnected stores. The payment can happen outside native Shopify Checkout while the successful order is still written back into Shopify for inventory, fulfillment and customer operations.

The basic flow
- The buyer starts with products from the Shopify cart.
- The external checkout verifies the items, quantities and total.
- The buyer completes payment through the connected payment account.
- Only after successful payment is confirmed does the integration create or recover the matching paid order in Shopify.
- Shopify then remains the operational record for fulfillment and inventory.
Why exactly-once order creation matters
Payment webhooks can be retried. Networks can time out. Buyers can refresh pages. A reliable checkout should therefore identify the transaction before creating a Shopify order so the same successful payment does not become two orders.
What should be written back
- Correct products, variants and quantities.
- Customer and delivery details.
- Shipping method and amount.
- Discounts, taxes and final paid total.
- Currency and payment status.
- Enough payment references for support and reconciliation.
How Voss handles the model

What to test before launch
Test successful payments, failed payments, repeated webhook delivery, multiple quantities, discount codes, shipping methods and your main currencies. A checkout is not production-ready merely because one happy-path card payment succeeds.
